A Rainbow Flies Over the Southside

*For “East of the River” Washington DC*

A hush fell over Adams Morgan
The rain fell and perms were ruined
Party plans fell through
A rainbow flies over the Southside.

Corner boys sippin’ lean
Discussing Trump nomination and ex-girlfriend plots
“My niggas you betta register to vote, shit is real”
A rainbow flies over the Southside.

Hands are held in public
People stare, but it doesn’t matter, love is love
Shy girl knows lovers lips for the first time
A rainbow flies on the Southside.

Gray skies turned to sunset
Work day turned to happy hour in Eastern Market
Poverty turned to appreciation of life in Anacostia
A rainbow flies over the Southside.
